In the waterside Sydney suburb of Clovelly we tour a home dubbed ‘not your regular beach house’ designed by Tom Mark Henry, with all the sophisticated bells and whistles to match.
While the sun shines and the scorching weather continues down south, we’re taking pleasure in sharing homes that challenge preconceived notions of coastal design, as much as they relish in the locale. One such home is the Clovelly House by Tom Mark Henry, situated along one of Sydney’s enviable coastlines.

Tom Mark Henry first made their way onto our radar nearly a year ago as designers to watch in the 2018 AIDA Awards. Nominated for their Bondi Residence that emanated all that is cool, calm and collected,  the studio have since gone on to build on a reputation of valuing the finer details. In fact, the Clovelly House is a telling example of their thoughtful consideration of what can really make a home sing, with the styling hand of Jack Milenkovic. Where nothing seems out-of-place neither inside or out, the Clovelly House is a tale of harmony and simplicity, deviating far from the beach side mould.

From the street, it’s the landscaping and raised zinc cladding that make the first impression of considered design. As you enter through the custom timber pivot door, you’re greeted by a mix of materials not dissimilar to the exterior, prioritising timber and steel. The use of materials is honest and centred on durability and timelessness; oak timber crafted into custom joinery, handmade tiles and terrazzo that dress the bathroom, natural marble as kitchen and bathroom countertops and concrete polished flooring that extends outdoors. These elements work together to create a sense of spaciousness and interconnectedness within the layout and with the outdoor space. What also really speaks for itself in this indoor/outdoor living experience is the integration of natural light. Our favourite interaction with the outdoors is the kiosk-style set up of the kitchen window and bench, letting you easily enjoy breakfast in the fresh air. 
The pared-back palette is described by Tom Mark Henry as a ‘deeply ingrained response to the building’s surroundings’ and lets the home feel relaxed and approachable as any beach house should. What really compliments this palette and the expert craftsmanship on show is the layering of design objects. The Solo Seat by Muller Van Severen and Den Holm sculpture are two that really tug at our design strings, upholding the overall tasteful scheme.

The Clovelly House represents more than just quality – it exemplifies a lifestyle of living well by the beach. Tom Mark Henry and the style eye of Jack Milenkovic have delivered robust and grandiose design work, by appreciating every nook, cranny and detail in between.
