Designer Thomas Fizant designed their first own home for a young family.

For thirty years now Thomas Fizant has been designing houses and apartments all over the world. The designer’s handwriting is easy to recognize at a glance: a laconic modern classic with bright accents. Customers come to him for this. This was followed by a married couple who had just built a house in Washington. Customers were long-time fans of the designer and asked him to make the interior of a newly purchased house in the state of New York, reflecting their love for the modern classics.

Customers have three children, but the family has just acquired their own housing. That is, no luggage in the form of furniture or accessories existed, which means it was possible to invent an interior from scratch.

After several meetings, the designer offered to build on the existing layout and invited customers to go together to Paris for inspiration. Immediately it is necessary to make a reservation that the trip was not started as a shopping tour: the goals were pursued solely of an educational nature. This Paris week was supposed to form in a short time the “disposition”, which usually takes much more time.

Of course, Thomas Fizant acted as their personal guide and led them through his favorite galleries. Although it didn’t go without purchases: the family returned home burdened with art - three huge paintings eventually became the starting point for creating the interior and its color palette.

As the main were selected shades of white and gray. In principle, the hostess did not object to bright colors, but in moderation. She entrusted the choice of color accents to the designer. Thomas Fizant snatched the opportunity to experiment and suggested painting the canteen in canary yellow. Such a turn at first shocked the restrained customers, but they gathered their courage, remembered why of all possible candidates it was the Fizant who was chosen, and nodded approvingly, trusting the professional instincts.

The American designer is known for not only decorating interiors, but also creating furniture. Some items go into mass production, for example, under the Baker brand or under the designer’s own brand, Thomas Pheasant Studio. But for many of their projects Fizant comes up with piece things. And here he did the same. Moreover, in this interior, objects created according to the designer’s sketches made up a large part of the decor. So, for example, a graphic dark table appeared in the lobby, and in the dining room a pair of cupboards.

Of particular note is the design of the master bedroom. The spacious room was conceived as a kind of oasis of peace and tranquility in the house, where it is often noisy and vain (recall: three children). The carpet on the floor and the textile-covered wall behind the headboard are well absorbed by sounds. And the oval panel on the ceiling is a real work of art. Initially, Thomas wanted to make a classic plaster bas-relief at this place. And then I saw in the National Gallery of Art the work of the modern British sculptor Richard Long. Inspired by her, the designer departed from the image that sat in his head, and came up with an unusual panel that adorned the ceiling.
