After the Storm: Restored Su Casa Mansion in Puerto Rico

The Champalimaud architecture studio in New York has turned the residence in Puerto Rico, ruined by hurricane Maria, into a luxurious country house.

In 2017, the Atlantic hurricane “Maria” claimed the lives of three thousand people and destroyed many houses in Puerto Rico, including the 20th-century country house Su Casa (translated from Spanish as “Your Home”).

The building has a rich history: in 1928, it was built by pilot Clara Livingston on the site of a wooden house destroyed by hurricane “Philip”. A little later, the owner sold it to the descendants of the Rockefellers, who turned it into a resort complex with a golf club and restaurant.

Only in 2012, Su Casa came into the possession of the Ritz-Carlton hotel group, which began renting a holiday home to large families and groups of friends. After the devastating hurricane of 2017, the owners turned to the Champalimaud bureau to restore and enrich the historic building.

“The villa was in ruins. It looked as if something had broken through here: the floors were bent, the doors did not close, and half the roof just disappeared, ”says Champalimaud chief designer Anna Bieber.

To protect the building from possible future bad weather, the architects first of all strengthened the concrete walls and fixed strong wooden eaves. In order to preserve the missionary style that was here during the first hostess of Clara Livingston, the designers made a choice in favor of Spanish clay tiles, cream shades of the palette and a large amount of wood in the interior design.

The architects added an internal elevator to the two external stairs that already exist in the house, so that families who come to rest here would be easier to move around the large villa. Along the house, the bureau has completed a bright terrace overlooking the ocean, where guests can relax in the shade, read a book or swing in a hammock, enjoying the scenery. Directly opposite the house is a large swimming pool surrounded by sun loungers.

The original antique wooden furniture Livingstone designers located in different rooms of the house. It is diluted with items of modern design brands such as Allied Maker and Minotti, as well as gizmos created to order by the designs of the bureau.

“We really wanted a special atmosphere to reign in the house. People will not come to the house with whitewashed walls, as if acquired in a Walmart department store, and feel that they were exactly in Puerto Rico, in the Dorado resort, ”says Anna Bieber.
