Featuring bold hues and geometric forms, the venue has been designed by locally-based studio Renesa to "instantly transport [visitors] to an uncertain realm".
Ancient sundials and puzzling video games informed the interiors of this restaurant and bar southwest of New Delhi, designed by architecture studio Renesa.

Unlocked is a bar and kitchen in the city of Gurugram that includes its own adventure-themed escape room and a selection of over 100 board games.

"The concept was to manipulate the space in order to create multiple pockets that arise from an array of lines and shapes," added the studio.

To achieve this other-worldly aesthetic, the studio looked to Jantar Mantars – huge masonry sundials erected by ruler Maharaja Jai Singh II in the 18th century.

Located in New Delhi, Jaipur, Ujjain, Mathura and Varanasi, the structures feature ornamental staircases and curvaceous walls punctuated by arched windows.

Monument Valley also became a point of reference, a colourful video game that sees players lead protagonist character Princess Ida through a maze of optical illusions to reach higher levels.

The restaurant, in turn, features a series of teal-blue or peach-coloured partitions punctuated with vaulted openings. They lead through to dining rooms that have been completed with square black tables and tan-leather seating banquettes.

Some of the walls have semicircular cut-outs that look through to small nooks dressed with wood-framed chairs and stools where guests can sit and play games.

Raised stencils with stair-like outlines have been applied to the walls and backlit to seem more three-dimensional.

A feature wall with rows of gabled or arch niches has also been created at the centre of the venue.

While most of the floor has been covered with concrete, some parts have been inlaid with slanting patches of brown, orange and sky-blue ceramic tiles.

The overall colour scheme is completed by bronze, cone-shaped pendant lamps that have been suspended from the ceiling.

Renesa was established in 2006 and is headed up by architect Sanjay Arora. It isn't the only studio to create illusory interiors – earlier this year Studio 10 developed an MC Escher-inspired guesthouse in Guilin, China which boasts anti-gravitational staircases and cotton candy-hued surfaces.

Renesa's interior design studio draws inspiration from the original deconstructed architecture, creating a space experience full of volume galleries and separate blocks, opening up a diverse experience for visitors from the start. The restaurant enters through a door with a glass panel that hints at the tones of the interior. Upon entering, the visitor was immediately taken to a geometrically prominent area reflecting the modern acceptance of traditional Indian architecture. Consistent application of continuous regular geometry and clear palettes at different scales is coordinated with warm, bright materials.


Its core philosophy is the integration of principles, inspired by the Jantar Mantar elements of Delhi and Jaipur and the indie game Monument Valley. The concept is to manipulate space, creating multiple pockets from a series of lines and shapes. The result is an arched opening that emphasizes the use of different tonal values ??and a design that uses purely shapes. Visitors are evoked by the journey during the tour: although connected, they remain intimate and dispersed, creating a “dynamic and comfortable atmosphere”. Changes in color and material form these segmented blocks that control the grouping of different but interrelated body blocks so that each block has a specific function.
These colored partitions and exposed concrete walls offset each other. One of the main walls also has a semicircular and pointed arch alcove. This creates a comfortable meeting and social interaction area, each of which is united by a concrete floor that is protected and highlights the mix of geometric shapes and heterogeneous colors. The surface, fixtures and furniture of the entire restaurant continue to have a playful color.


The project chose a unique sculptural lighting design to distinguish between different volumes – the bay lights illuminate the walls of the café, while the rose gold chandeliers and floor lamps further add personality and cast interesting shadows in the space. Therefore, the interior also changes with the atmosphere of the space.
The birth of these elements is intended to express a unique design in a simple language that makes this restaurant a unique place in the region. As part of a loose, cross-reference design, in collaboration with the brand team, Studio Renesa developed a strategy from a design perspective that made the building work.
