The decorator Mia Karlova recreated the atmosphere of childhood in her country house at her grandmother and grandfather's country house.

This suburban house in the suburbs built from scratch. Outwardly, it resembles an old manor, and inside Mia Karlova recreated the atmosphere of the late 1970s - early 1980s, which, according to her memories, was at the grandmother's and grandfather's cottage in Old Kupavna. “This is about the time when Earthlings and ABBA sounded from the receivers, the curtains were with large pineapples, communism was no longer built, happiness was a bucket of GED jam, and Levi’s jeans were the ultimate dream,” Mia Karlova begins her story. It took her more than four years to collect this emotional atmosphere.
The house built of timber set a certain style, but the decorator wanted to get away from intrusive rustic and sheathed all the walls with vertical boards with a complex rhythm and toning that were selected for a long time. The background turned out to be quite active, so for the visual balance in the interior appeared equally striking curtains with prints based on sketches by Joseph Frank, a famous Austrian artist whose legacy is studied in design schools and shown in museums around the world. Miya found the fabric according to his designs in the showroom of the Swedish brand Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm, which has not changed its address since 1924.
“I like complex patterns and unexpected collaborations,” says the decorator. “For example, the carpet in the living room is woven at the French family manufactory Ateliers Pinton according to the sketches of the beginning design studio Ma Poésie.” An English vintage sofa and an unusual chair with a pouf of the modern Italian brand Imperfetto Lab complement the decor.
It is worth noting that Mia Karlova grew up in the family of a gallery owner and art historian, and from childhood was surrounded by painting and art objects. That is why this is not an ascetic and typical Soviet interior, but a bright and artistic one. Not only paintings, but also ceramics, tapestries and other decorative details that make the interior alive are responsible for this.
Many items were bought practically from the wheels. For example, the decorator stumbled upon the living room carpet mentioned above in an instagram even before it was released for sale, and realized that this was exactly what she needed. A coffee table with a blue glass worktop, which can be seen in the room with a fireplace, was made to order according to its sketches. “This interior is not a story recreated in detail, but my impressions of childhood in the country, rethought memories, a certain aftertaste,” explains Karlova.
The living room with a fireplace is the only room that is different from everyone else in the house: here the walls are painted in a complex blue-green color, and the interior is built around a painting by Vladimir Brainin - it hangs on a wooden risalit over the fireplace. It did not appear by chance: in this way the decorator seamlessly integrated a tree here, which serves as a background throughout the house. “This room was conceived as contemplative,” says Mia. “The furniture is arranged so that all guests are facing each other and can enjoy the pictures, the fire in the fireplace or the view of the garden.” To do this, the hostess abandoned the usual in the living room area of ??the sofa and put five different chairs.
Mia jokes that selfishly recreated the atmosphere of her childhood at the dacha under the noble and tacit consent of her husband. However, his contribution to family history is also significant. During the entire time that the interior was designed, the husband of Mia was engaged in landscape design. As a result, the house is surrounded by a luxurious cereal garden, causing the curiosity of its neighbors.
Despite the fact that we see the finished result, the point in this story is not yet worth it. “It’s impossible to stop working on your interior - new details will always appear, and this is a normal life process. I always leave room for development to my customers, ”says Mia Karlova.
